ski hat

Making a ski hat on the sock machine.

Using your 60 slot cylinder set up with scrap yarn.  Put ribber on and set at half pitch--line up the ribber slot so that it comes out between two cylinder needles.  Leave in all cylinder needles.  Work your way around putting in all ribber needles.   Try a few rounds to make sure it works okay.

Tie on regular yarn and make sure it clears the yarn carrier.

Knit a VERY LONG tube using a full skein of yarn.  (If you know how you want your hat to look when finished, it will help.)  You might even want more than one skein.  It will need to be double the length you want it when finished.  The hat is worn with the edge folded back so figure from tip of top of hat to the end which includes the folded back portion and double your measurement.  If using really thin yarn, you might even want the edge folded over twice.  Experiment a little here.

When the tube is completed, you will remove it from the machine and unravel an 18" tail.  Thread through a darning needle so you can use it doubled and go around the edge through ONLY stitches from the cylinder needles.  Do the same on the beginning end.  Pull tight and tie off at both ends.

Ravel back all of the ribber stitches and stretch sideways to shape.  Stuff one end up inside the other and fold back the edge.  You might want to add a pompon or tassle.

This hat is not easy to make from fuzzy yarns.  You will have a difficult time unraveling.  It is suggested that the first few tries be made with slicker yarns.

For small children, you could probably get by without raveling back.

While the hat is made on 90 stitches, the unraveled stitch is about twice the size of a knitted one, so it is almost equivalent to the size it would be if you had 120 stitches.
